Course Details

This unit specifies the outcomes required to perform slinging techniques, including the selection and inspection of lifting gear and/or the directing of the crane operator in the movement of the load when the load is out of view of the crane/ operator for licensing purposes.

COURSE OUTCOMES

By undertaking this course, participants will gain the skills and knowledge required to obtain a WorkCover Licence. Upon successful completion of learning activities, participants will progress to assessment by a WorkCover assessor for their licensing test. Participants will receive training in the following skills and knowledge areas;

  • Types of lifting equipment
  • Angle factors and reeve factors
  • Calculations
  • Whistles and hand signals
  • Hazard identification
  • Crane set up and moving loads
  • Bends and hitches

PRE-REQUISITES AND ENTRY REQUIREMENTS

There are no formal pre-requisites for this unit of competency. Candidates must be 18 years and over to participate in this course. Persons wishing to undertake this course need to have the physical capacity to carry out the work safely. Basic literacy and numeracy skills are also required for successful completion. To enter the course, participants must also bring their own whistle, wear steel capped boots, long pants and safety shirt or vest.

DELIVERY

Training is a mixture of classroom and practical. Participants must successfully complete written theory and practical demonstration assessments for both the unit and WorkCover to acquire a licence. This course is delivered over 4 or 5 days (depending on course structure), of face-to-face training and assessment and may be delivered either at FHV  Training’s fully equipped premises or at the workplace, where suitable.

RPL

RPL / RCC (recognition) is available to participants who can provide evidence of competency for the units undertaken. However, participants will still need to undertake the WorkCover assessment process.

PATHWAYS AND CAREER

Upon successful completion of this unit of competency, you will have the skills and knowledge to work, or gain employment as Dogmen on worksites where cranes are operating in areas such as the building industry, heavy construction industry, marine environments, and on high rise building sites. Dogmen may choose to progress to work either in crane operation, in crane dispatch supervision, or crane supervision.
